The “Amber Prize” Tournament. The book.
The “Amber Prix” (“Amber Prix International”, «Янтарный приз», 1968–2026) tournament is a living reflection of history, recalling a time when it was an important part of the Socialist world of sport, and today it unites the global bodybuilding community.
According to long-standing sporting traditions, among international competitions the “Amber Prix” ranks third in terms of continuity and historical significance—after N.A.B.B.A. (National Amateur Body Building Association) Mr. Universe (held since 1950) and JOE WEIDER’S Mr. Olympia (held since 1965).
Over the decades, athletes from many countries who have participated in this tournament take pride in their “Amber Prix” achievements, considering them among the most significant in their sporting careers.
As the tournament approaches its 60-th anniversary, a book is being prepared and will be presented to participants and guests of the 2027 event. Preparatory work on the publication is already underway.
Significant Events in the History of the “Amber Prize”
In the international history of the “Amber Prize,” several particularly important moments stand out:
• The rise and the first tournaments – the initial stage during which the competition’s traditions were formed.
• 1973: the ban and persecution of bodybuilding – a difficult period for the sport.
• 1973–1978: illegal competitions organized by Dr. Edmundas Daubaras – a stage crucial for the survival of bodybuilding.
• Dr. Edmundas Daubaras’ struggle with the authorities against the ban on bodybuilding.
• Dr. Edmundas Daubaras’ petition to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the U.S.S.R. in Moscow, defending the legitimacy of bodybuilding.
• 1989–1991: Dr. Edmundas Daubaras’ struggle for independence in Lithuanian sport, carried out in the context of the “Amber Prize.”
• 2007: the 40-th anniversary of the tournament – the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania voted to fund the event from the state budget.
• 2011: recognition by the Vatican – a high evaluation of Dr. Edmundas Daubaras’ activities during the period of the bodybuilding ban.
• 2017: the 50-th anniversary of the tournament – a report about the event was broadcast by the global CNN television network.
• Since 2010, the “Amber Prize” logo has been used in competitions in Europe, Asia and South America.
Some time ago the World learned about the first fitness athlete from the USA BRONE DUBAR (New York, 1927). The World learned about the various International Sport Organizations. Today a number of historical books and articles are published. Many of them are presenting not full and often incorrect information. For example, several years ago in Lithuania was issued a book “Lithuanian bodybuilding history” which carries facts that are not correct. Bodybuilding in the socialist countries started at the second part of fifties of the last century. It appeared suddenly and at once became very popular. Many people wanted to develop and change their bodies.
A known contemporary poet and drama producer, a former famous USSR bodybuilding trainer VITALIJ ASOVSKIJ (Vilnius, Lithuania) writes:
«Developing the Ancient God.
When in the middle of fifties of the last century bodybuilding was a popular sport in the Western countries, the Europe was making the first steps. But the young people did not pay any attention to the negatyve sayings about bodybuilding and rushed to the gyms to train. The enthusiasm was unbelievable. The first Man reached the Cosmoss. People thought that there are no limits and everything is possible. It seemd that the Golden Times came. We know how to reach the Cosmoss, how to develop atomic enegry, how to create fantastic fipls and how to write perfect books. It seemed that people had found the way to develop their brains like a sportsme do at their training. Developing the brains the people are like a sportsmen. Popular saying „If one has body power, no brains needed“ seemed uncorrect. The stereotip of a scientist was like an aold thinny man. People were jocking thet a scientist better do not go outside his home in a windy day. The wind will blow him out. And now, finally, the bodybuilding opened new horizons to develop both brains and muscles as well. It seemed that a Man is very close to the God“.
People thought that there are no limits and everything is possible. It seemd that the Golden Times came. Popular saying „If one has body power, no brains needed“ seemed uncorrect. The stereotip of a scientist was like an aold thinny man. People were jocking thet a scientist better do not go outside his home in a windy day. The wind will blow him out. First information about bodybuilding, famous athletes and some methods of training reached the USSR through bodybuilding magazines „Health and Strength“ and „Iron Man“ (both UK), through „Muscle Builder“(USA) and through “Sport dla Wszystkich“ (Poland). Then local press of various Social Republics started publishing materials about bodybuilding too. Among them Russian „Gantelnaja gimnastika“ (1957, Борис Пустовойт, «Гантельная гимнастика»), „Sportivnaja zizn Rissii“ (1960-1970, "Cпортивная жизнь России"), Lithuanian „Science and Life“ („1965 -1966, „Mokslas ir Gyvenimas“), „Kalba Vilnius“ (1967-1969), Polish „How to become strong and attractive“ (1960, Stanislaw Zakrzewski, „Jak stac sie silnym i sprawnym“), „Strength, health, beauty“ (1962, Stanislaw Zakrzewski, „Sila-sprawnosc-piekno“), „ABC of a Young Strongman“ (1965, Stanislaw Zakrzewski, „ABC mlodego silacza“).
It were Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary to start bodybuilding in the socialist countries. Bodybuilders of these countries organized local competitons and sometimes competed in between. New famous names appeared such as 1967 Czechoslovakia Champion JURAJ VYSNY.
First to visit the mentioned countries from the USSR were the Lithuanians. In 1968 Lithuania Kaunas „Azuolas Gym“ bodybuilders went to Warszawa to compete with „Herkules Gym“ athletes. Lithuanians were led by VYTAUTAS ZUMERIS and Polich team by EUGENIUSZ PAWLOK.
It was held in Lithuania Kaunas City and national teams of Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia participated there. The competiton lasted two days and six thousand spectators filled the biggest hall of the city. Then the over all Champion was LEONAS PIVORIUNAS (Vilnius, Lithuania).

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MODERN BODYBUILDING. ANOTHER VIEW.
After evaluating the WFF-WBBF (World Fitness Federation, World Body Building Federation) International bodybuilding activities that are lasting of nearly 50 years, the WFF-WBBF received political and financial support for a huge global project called „Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding“, the ultimate book on bodybuilding («Энциклопедия современного культуризма»). Even the Roman Pope Benedictus XVI blesed the WFF-WBBF International activities in 2012.
At the moment the support reaches over 200 000 US dollars, but as the encyclopedia will be translated into various languages, the amount of money will be enlarged.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
The real work over this unoque global Project already started. The Head of the working goup over the „Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding“ is the President WFF-WBBF International Edmundas Daubaras. This Encyclopedia will be as the „opponent“ to the previous Bodybuilding Histories that were written for the commercial private sport structures, most of the USA. As you know – sport commercial people wrote bodybuilding sport history for themselves in person and there was no place for lots of the Bodybuilding Legends, many important International Persons and International Bodybuilding activities and competitions (among them the World‘s oldest Bodybuilding Contest „Amber Prix International“). Not a single word! And this coveres more than half of the World!!!
We will do our best to write the real another Bodybuilding History, that will be proved by the presented real documents. We will present the legal and also unofficial federations and various kind of sport units. We will present many until now hidden VIP International Bodybuilding Persons, Bodybuilding Legends, sportsmen and their trainers. We will show a number of hidden International Contests, that played and still play a great role for the development of the global sport in general. Also on the real bodybuilding examples we will present the inovations in the contemporary bodybuilding training methods and thechnologies and dieting.
We hope the Encyclopedia will be a success as we work on preparing and publishing bodybuilding materials from 1989. Some of our previous magazines were published in various languages in over 2 000 000 issues and spread in various countries.
SOURCES.
First of all for the „Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding“ we use our historic personal archieves of the WFF, WBBF, IFBB (International Federation of Body Builders), WABBA (World Amateur Body Building Association) and NABBA (National Amateur Body Building Association) that we collected during the 50 years lasting bodybuilding activities. Also we use the IFBB juridic documents that were given us by the IFBB Owner and life President Ben Weider, the IFBB Lower Alex Bauer and the IFBB Vice President Paul Chua, the WABBA Owner and President Serge Nubret, NABBA Presidents Oscar Heidenstam and Ivan Dunbar.

BODYBUILDING HISTORY. BEN WEIDER. HOW IT WAS IN REAL

(Preparing the 33-d issue of the WFF-WBBF International magazine „Sport of Fitness and Bodybuilding“ we are working on the unique historic article)
During the last fourty years International President WFF-WBBF (World Fitness federation, World Body Building Federation) EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS personally took part at many most important International historic bodybuilding events. At many of them EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS was not only a participant, but even many of these events had happened under his initiative.
During all his active life in sport EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS was always in good friendly relations with the International Bodybuilding Top Personalities: BEN WEIDER, WAYNE DE MILIA, PAMELA KAGAN, PAUL CHUA, SERGE NUBRET, OSCAR HEIDENSTAM, IVAN DUNBAR, VOJTECH FIALA. During a long period of time to set some definite questions the Owner and life President of the IFBB (International Federation of Body Builders) BEN WEIDER many times used to ask EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS to meet his assistant RAFAEL SANTONJA. Even today EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS communicates with nearly all International bodybuilding leaders who play important role in the World‘s Sport movement.
Personal relations of EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS with BEN WEIDER had and still have big value. Due to these relations EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS was always in the centre of important International activities. These relations with BEN WEIDER gave him opportunity to get the information that others could not get. This gave the possibility for EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS to influence many important International bodybuilding events. Rich WFF-WBBF archieves prove decades lasting relations, personal meetings and correspondence with BEN WEIDER.
BEN WEIDER in his private magazines many times published materials sent by EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS. Much attention in Weider‘s magazines had been given for even now one of the World‘s oldest still runnig International „Amber Prix“ Contest (1968-2011). For many years „Amber Prix International“ was the unofficial bodybuilding Championship of the USSR (for many years bodybuilding was prohibited in the USSR, Union Soviet Socialist Republics). For most time of the history of „Amber Prix International“ EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS was the main organizer of this event. And still he is (under the WFF-WBBF). Evaluating the importance of the „Amber Prix International“ a number of times BEN WEIDER sent his own Diplomas for the „Amber Prix“ Champions. It was BEN WEIDER to press Vice President IFBB International PAUL CHUA and President IFBB Israel ASHER FRIG to send their teams to Klaipeda (Lithuania) to participate at the „Amber Prix International“. It was BEN WERDER to give the order for his Spanish assistant RAFAEL SANTONJA to host „Amber Prix“ Champions at the IFBB Mediteranian Contest held in Marocco (see letters of BEN WEIDER, www.wff.lt, read forum). Finally relations between EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS and BEN WEIDER reached such a level, that BEN WEIDER asked to stop discussing and making decissions via correspondence and to start settle all important questions at the common private meetings. During a definite period a number of meetings of EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS and BEN WEIDER were held - Leningrad, Moscow (USSR, Russia), Paris (France), Kuala Lampur (Malaysia), New York (USA). EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS was always a personal guest of BEN WEIDER. BEN WEIDER had been ready to meet EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS at any possible time even postponing his other works and duties. The top culmination of the relations was when both decided to set a Joint-Venture Company (protocol of intentions, November 25, 1990, Helmsley Palace, New Yourk, USA, archieves WFF-WBBF International).
No matter that later on EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS went his own way and started the WFF-WBBF International, no matter he stopped his official contacts with the IFBB, he has always been in friendly relations with BEN WEIDER. Even when EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS was already leading WFF-WBBF International but keeping old common contacts BEN WEIDER used to send him the IFBB magazines and materials (until BEN WEIDER stepped away and sold his private IFBB magazines in 2000).
