WFF-WBBF SOUTH AFRICA: World Championships Report
This year of 2009 has been one of the most successful years that bodybuilding has experienced in South Africa. The introduction of WFF-WBBF caused an absolute stir among athletes all over the country. The fairness of our competitions drew 255 top class athletes to our SA Championships of which a team of 41 athletes were chosen to represent South Africa at the WORLD Championships held in Tallinn Estonia and only 27 whet over to represent South Africa, which Tommy Du Rand think is the coldest place on earth. The athletes found themselves competing in temperatures of up to -2 ° Centigrade.
Our South African overall champion Shaun Jachau had a very good win in his division, Men’s Performance Bodybuilding which was closely contested and was in great condition and had really come with the attitude to win, which makes for a worthy champion. On Shaun’s heels was another South African Warren Moodley who fought off a serious challenge from the 3rd placed contestant to take a very credible second place (2nd).
The one and the only Philippa Wilkie Lamont, what is left to say about such a worthy competitor? You were absolutely brilliant coming in to dethrone the lady who had held the title of Ladies Athletic Bodybuilding World Champion for the last five years. Your gold medal has made us all very proud of you. Marissa Venter’s 3rd placing in this same division was absolutely outstanding in beating the lady who for the last four years had been the runner up in this division.
The change in Elaine Watkins from the SA’s to the worlds showed us her dedication to winning. She took 1st place because she wanted it the most on the day and did not disappoint in the bikini round and the evening gown. Her gown was outstanding. Well done.
Farrah found herself winning the Ladies O/40 Performance Bodybuilding (Figure) division, a division that she was not accustomed to because this is not a bodybuilding division. Sylvia Nel took a very good 3rd place in this same division. Farrah also found herself taking 3rd place in the Ladies Extreme Bodybuilding (Figure).
Well done to all the athletes that finished in the top placings, Julian Louw who wowed the crowd with his amazing routine, Ladies Bikini (category 3) saw Marilyn Booysen take 2nd place and Lizelle van der Merwe take 3rd place, Ladies Model Fitness U/16 saw Zone van der Merwe take 3rd place, Men’s Super Athletic Bodybuilding saw an amazing Rudi Stols take 2nd place.
I, Tommy Du Rand would like to thank all the Provincial leaders and their teams, all the judges, all those who go unnoticed but yet contribute so much, such as backstage mangers, sound engineers, those setting up stages, cleaners after shows and all involved in helping make our shows as professional as they are.
