WORLD BODYBUILDING HISTORY.
MOST FAMOUS LITHUANIA BODYBUILDERS.
Some time ago a Lithuania sport statiste visited Klaipeda. He said that in bodybuilding sport history there were only two famous bodybuilders in Klaipeda. That were NATALIJA MURNIKOVIENE and VIKTORAS JUCYS. By the way, both bodybuilders were pupils of the President W.F.F. - W.B.B.F. (World Fitness Federation, World Bodybuilding Federation) DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS. During their sport life no one bodybuilder of East Europe won against them in competitions.

SOCIALIST WORLD BODYBUILDING HISTORY.
FIRST ARTICLE. LET US START.
We are still working on the “World Bodybuilding Encyclopedia” («Энциклопедия всемирного культуризма»). Until now nobody covered total World Bodybuilding History. There are only some fragmentary stories. For example, some time ago a book about former bodybuilder and President of the National Bodybuilding Federation of Russia VLADIMIR DUBININ (Владимир Дубинин) was published. But after his defeat in 1974 “Georg Tenno Memorial” («Мемориал Георга Тенно», 1971 - 2024) VLADIMIR DUBININ totally left our sport until 1986. In 1986 DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS (Др. Эдмундас Даубарас) invited him to “Amber Prix International” (“Gintarinis prizas”, «Янтарный приз», 1968 - 2025) and this way brought him back to bodybuilding activities. Anyway until 1987 VLADIMIR DUBININ was a sportsman and trainer and never was among bodybuilding organizers and leaders. So what could be written in the book of VLADIMIR DUBININ when during thirteen years he was out of the game? Similar situation is with other bodybuilding “history writers”.
Through the last century for a long time World was divided into capitalist (Western) and Socialist (Eastern) parts. In sport too. In bodybuilding as well.
From time to time some historic information about the I.F.B.B. (International Federation of Body Builders) federation appeared in bodybuilding press. At the same time still there is no historic information about the “Eastern” bodybuilding. Everything that is available is nothing serious. Somebody use to name himself a “Great Champion”, some name themselves “Great Organizers”.
Most important bodybuilding events happened through the life of DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS. He participated everywhere - on National level, on Socialist and World bodybuilding level as well. DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS graduated Vilnius State University with specialties of Philology and Law. Comparing with all U.S.S.R. bodybuilders and Organizers DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS was the only one to know languages. This let him to communicate with everybody direct. It is the reason DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS was personally in the center of the main International Events in Socialist Countries and in all the World too. He was not only involved in these events - some of them he initiated himself. DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS was in friendly contacts with all most important VIP Persons of World bodybuilding - the I.F.B.B. President Canadian BEN WEIDER, the W.A.B.B.A. (World Amateur Body Building Association) President French SERGE NUBRET and the N.A.B.B.A. (National Amateur Body Building Association) Chairman British OSCAR HEIDENSTAM.
Fourty years passed since Socialist system was ruined. Various rumors spread about Socialist bodybuilding. We will make the question clear.
Most often we mention famous bodybuilders and their wins at the competitions. Anyway the sport is developed not by sportsmen. It were sport organizers and bodybuilding leaders that develop our sport. Often those organizers are forgotten. Bodybuilders not appear themselves - to reach the top they need a skilful trainers suggestions and advises. There should be organizers that are making Great Contests for the bodybuilders and then they became great. There should be some persons to advertise and publish the wins of bodybuilders. Without this nobody can be a Great Champion and nobody can have a Great Name.
We will write this article basing on bodybuilding Events in Socialist World and mentioning the “Western” World only in the background. Until Encyclopedia works go on we will do our best to publish a separate book about bodybuilding in the Socialist World.
NOTHING COMES OF NOTHING.
PART TWO. BEGINNING OF BODYBUILDING SPORT.
We will not speak now about the bodybuilding happenings in the very beginning of the twentieth century. At that time bodybuilding was not sport. Just a number of enthusiasts were pending time this way.
When we mean the beginning of bodybuilding as sport we should start with the USA. Until there was no Ministry of Sport in the US all sports were governed by the Amateur Athletic Union (A.A.U.). A.A.U. was established in 1888. Аmong other sports A.A.U. was governing National Weightlifting Federation. On International level weightlifting was governed by a member of I.O.C. International F.I.H. (Federation Internationale Halterophile) Federation. Called as “Father of America Weightlifting” American BOB HOFFMAN (Robert Collins Hoffman, 1898 - 1985) was one of the F.I.H. leaders then. When under initiative of BOB HOFFMAN in 1947 F.I.H. took International bodybuilding under it’s control the name was changed to F.I.H.C. (Federation Internationale Halterophile et Culturisme).
BOB HOFFMAN used to produce an sell supplements, sport equipment and sport magazines. He was selling his products though the members of the F.I.H. that represented various countries. Nobody else could do the same. For example private I.F.B.B. (International Federation of Body Builders) company owner Canadian BEN WEIDER had nothing to do with F.I.H. and all doors were closed for him. BOB HOFFMAN was seeking official recognition for bodybuilding.
1947. FIRST “MR. UNIVERSE” CONTEST.
The first real “Bodybuilding Empire” was created through the A.A.U. (Amateur Athletic Union) in the USA by American BOBO HOFFMAN. In real A.A.U. united USA National Sport Federations and it was the Ministry of Sport in the USA at that time. They use to call BOBO HOFFMAN “the father of America Weightlifting”. A.A.U. since 1939 was organizing USA bodybuilding “Mr. America” contests. BOB HOFFMAN wanted to make bodybuilding an official recognized sport through A.A.U. and F.I.H.. Through A.A.U. and F.I.H. also he wanted to present bodybuilding sport to the World. USA weightlifting though A.A.U. was a member of the International Weightlifting Federation F.I.H.
In 1947 F.I.H. organized the World Weightlifting Championship and International Congress in Philadelphia (USA). Under the efforts of BOB HOFFMAN the International Congress decided to lead and control World’s bodybuilding on official level. It was immediately decided to organize the first in Sport’s History International Bodybuilding “Mr. Universe” contest alongside with the F.I.H. World Weightlifting Championship in Philadelphia. Then the Over All “Mr. Universe” Champion was a pupil of BOB HOFFMAN a famous America weightlifter STEVE STANKO. That was a Historical Happening and STEVE STANKO became a Historical Person.
1948. SECOND “MR. UNIVERSE’ IN LONDON.
It was a tradition of F.I.H.C. not to organize World Weightlifting Championship in “Olympic” years. What to do with the second F.I.H.C. bodybuilding „Mr. Universe“ competition? Then the idea to organize the F.I.H.C. bodybuilding “Mr. Universe” during the 1948 “Olympic Games” struck BOB HOFFMAN. There were real ways because F.I.H.C. was a member of the International Olympic Committee (I.O.C.). BOB HOFFMAN addressed British OSCAR STATE who was the President of B.A.W.L.A. (British Amateur Weight Lifting Association) to assist him. At the same time B.A.W.L.A. asked the Chairmen of the British Bodybuilding “Health and Strength” Magazine to assist them too. Through F.I.H.C. departments in various countries B.A.W.L.A. invited athletes to the contest in London. At the same time BOB HOFFMAN brought USA bodybuilders to compete. There were 1800 spectators at the second F.I.H.C. “Mr. Universe” in London. All money profit of the competition went to B.A.W.L.A.. After several preliminary rounds the finalists were ANDRE DRAPP (France) and Americans JOHN GRIMEK and STEVE REEVES. JOHN GRIMEK was proclaimed the Over All Winner of the second F.I.H.C. “Mr. Universe”. STEVE REEVES spoke on microphone saying that “John Grimek is the greatest bodybuilder who ever lived“.
1950. FIRST N.A.B.B.A. “MR. UNIVERSE”.
In 1950 under the efforts of the Chairmen of “Health and Strength” Magazine N.A.B.B.A. (National Amateur Body Building Association) was created in the Great Britain. As a former N.A.B.B.A. President IVAN DUNBAR told us – N.A.B.B.A. Association was juridically registered as a „Public Club“. In 1950 N.A.B.B.A. organized the first N.A.B.B.A. “Mr. Universe” in London. The Over All Champion was STEVE REEVES (USA). At the same time a member of the International Olympic Committee F.I.H.C. went on organizing it’s own “Mr. Universe” contest. Comparing with N.A.B.B.A. “Mr. Universe” F.I.H.C. competitions were the official ones. For the two decades no one could confront F.I.H.C. as the official Bodybuilding Sport was under F.I.H.C. control. Even the Commercial I.F.B.B. Company of the WEIDER brothers JOE and BEN could not imagine even to think being equal to F.I.H.C..
1959.IMPORTANT TIME FOR SOCIALIST BODYBUILDING.
THIRD ARTICLE. BODYBUILDING COMES TO SOCIALST WORLD.
The thirteenth F.I.H.C. (Federation Internationale Halterophile et Culturisme) bodybuilding “Mr. Universe” contest was organized in 1959 in Warszawa (People’s Republic of Poland). Traditionally this contest was held together with the annual F.I.H.C. World Weightlifting Championship. First time in sport history Socialist audience and athletes saw “live” bodybuilders direct. At the F.I.H.C. World Weightlifting Championship the U.S.S.R. weightlifters were the best. The personal leadership was under Japan origin American multiple Olympic Champion TOMMY KONO (Tamio "Tommy" Kono, 1930 – 2016) and Russian Olympic Champion YURY VLASOV (Юрий Власов, 1935 – 2021). TOMMY KONO was a student of BOB HOFFMAN (Robert Collins Hoffman, 1898 - 1985) and in his life he three times became over all F.I.H.C. bodybuilding “Mr. Universe” Champion (1954, 1955, 1961). In 1987 YURY VLASOV became the first President of the officially recognized “U.S.S.R. Bodybuilding Federation” («Федерация культуризма С.С.С.Р.»). Again the biggest popularizer of bodybuilding through the World was BOB HOFFMAN.
The Over All Winner of the 1959 F.I.H.C. bodybuilding “Mr. Universe” in Warszawa was a National French bodybuilding Champion GUY MIERCZUK (born in 1936).
Several USA private companies tried to fight with International leadership of BOB HOFFMAN. That were the owners of private I.F.B.B. (International Federation of Body Builders) commercial company brothers JOE (Joseph Weider, 1919 - 2013) and BEN (Benjamin Weider, 1923 - 2008) WEIDERS and another American DAN LURIE (1923 - 2013) with his own company W.B.B.G. (World Body Building Guild). Both companies were copying activities of BOB HOFFMAN but they had no chances to succeed as behind BOB HOFFMAN were International Olympic Committee (I.O.C.) members A.A.U. (Amateur Atlete’s Union) and F.I.H.C..
Copying BOB HOFFMAN along with the thirteenth F.I.H.C. bodybuilding “Mr. Universe” contest WEIDER brothers organized their first “Mr. Universe” in Mexico in 1959. That was a sad competition at there were only few competitors in three high categories from USA, Mexico, Canada ant England. Later in 1977 I.F.B.B. changed “Mr. Universe” name to the “World Championship”. I.F.B.B. Category Winners in Mexico were EMILIO KURY (Mexico), ED THERIAULT (Canada) and EDDIE SYLVESTRE (Mexico, 1931 - 2001). The Over All Winner was EDDIE SYLVESTRE and that was the greatest win of his sport life.
AMERICAN BOB HOFFMAN BROUGHT BODYBUILDING TO U.S.S.R..
INTERNATIONAL BODYBUILDING ORGANIZATION ESTABLISHED.
In 1963 under direct influence American BOB HOFFMAN (Robert Collins Hoffman, 1898 - 1985) and British OSCAR STATE (Oscar State, Obe
1911 - 1984) and under the initiative of the F.I.H.C. (F.I.H., Federation Internationale Halterophile, later F.I.H.C., Federation Internationale Halterophile et Culturiste, later I.W.F., International Weightlifting Federation) in the U.S.S.R. was established first International Bodybuilding Organization (Общественный комитет атлетической гимнастики С.С.С.Р.). of the Socialist World. The new federation was established at the “U.S.S.R. Weightlifting Federation” («Федерации тяжёлой атлетики С.С.С.Р.»). The U.S.S.R. Sport Ministry (Goskomsport, Госкомспорт С.С.С.Р.) appointed a known Russia weightlifter ROMAN MOROZ (Роман Мороз) as the President of this Organization. Then the U.S.S.R. was not ready to face this innovation and the new organization worked only formally. There were no bodybuilders in the U.S.S.R. then.
We would like to underline that the I.F.B.B. federation (International Federation of Body Builders) was created only in 1970 in Belgrade (Yugoslavia) by the General Secretary F.I.H.C. OSCAR STATE. WEIDER brothers JOE (Joseph Weider, 1919 - 2013) and BEN (Benjamin Weider, 1923 - 2008) had no education, no knowledge and no practice in official sport work. OSCAR STATE had. Until that time I.F.B.B. was only a commercial company of WEIDER brothers.
At the same time working since 1950 British N.A.B.B.A. (National Amateur Body Building Association) has been never connected with official sport.

100 YEARS WORLD FITNESS HISTORY.
BRONE DUBAR - WORLD’S FIRST FITNESS ATHLETE.
International sport society knows very well about the U.S.A. sportsman BRONE DUBAR - DAUBARAITE (Broné “Brownie” Dubar, 1906 - 1986). Emigrated from Lithuania to USA in 1912 just before the First World War she was the World’s First Female Fitness Athlete. At that time there was no bodybuilding and fitness sport and BRONE DAUBARAITE did not participate at the competitions. As many athletes and strongmen of her time she travelled though the World Countries and demonstrated her unique acrobatic and gymnastic sport programs. Also at that time the same did famous USA male athletes LOUIS CYR (1863 - 1912) and CHARLES ATLAS (Charles Atlas, Angelo Siciliano, 1893 - 1972). Newspapers wrote that BRONE DUBAR looks like an image of “Vogue” magazine. When the second World War started BRONE DUBAR stopped her participation. Today we can say she was much ahead the time she lived. Due to her efforts several DUBAR families were involved in sports and still are.

WHO IN U.S.S.R. COULD THINK ON INTERNATIONAL LEVEL?
ROLE OF PERSONALITY IN LIFE AND SPORT.
Everyone‘s personality depends on many items. One of them is – basing on which position a personality analyzes all happenings. We mean bodybuilders, of course. Do you think of this as a sportsman, as a trainer or organizer or you think as an International Leader? Specialists of our sport scrutinize the same documents and the same basics but everybody of them evaluate the same items on a different way. Then we may look if this specialist is of a local level or he represents the International one. The specialist must get himself above the happenings of his time and he must look on everything like a flying bird high in the sky. Otherwise he can not understand what is going on.
In the U.S.S.R. there were only few personalities who could think wide in the very beginning of bodybuilding. The representatives of various regions of the U.S.S.R. mostly were thinking in a narrow way. For example, Tiumen gym trainer JEVGENIJ KOLTUN (Евгений Колтун, R.S.F.S.R.) always represented a gym level and nothing more. The same was with a Kaliningrad trainer JURIJ SMOLIAKOV (Юрий Смоляков, R.S.F.S.R.) and with a Severodvinsk trainer the U.S.S.R. Champion ALEKSANDR LEMECHOV (Александр Лемехов, R.S.F.S.R.). The same was with a Leningrad gym trainer VLADIMIR DUBININ (Владимир Дубинин, R.S.F.S.R.). A representative of Riga (Latvian SSR) FELIKS SAJKOVSKIJ (Феликс Сайковский) and nearly all representatives of the Lithuanian SSR were on the same local level of understanding. There were no more active bodybuilding organizers in the U.S.S.R. at that time but only those we mentioned only. The exception could be the General Secretary of the formal „U.S.S.R. Bodybuilding Federation“ («Федерация культуризма С.С.С.Р.») ROMANAS KALINAUSKAS (Романас Калинаускас). How we can understand this „U.S.S.R. Bodybuilding Federation“ when bodybuilding in the U.S.S.R. is prohibited? It had totally no power. But unfortunatelly all activities of ROMANAS KALINAUSKAS were done through intrigues and blackmailing of his sport friends to the Communist political powers. Knowing no foreign languages ROMANAS KALINAUSKAS was separated from the World and could not understand the International process. Another exceptional person was INNAR MARDO (Иннар Мардо, 1946 – 2002, Tallinn, Estonian SSR). He also did not know any foreign language and worked only in Estonia. Even to do anything on the U.S.S.R. level he had no interest. But on regular basis organized by INNAR MARDO „Georg Tenno Memorial“ («Мемориал Георга Тенно», 1971 – 1924, Tallinn, Estonian SSR) contests gave him a huge prestige and respect of others. One more exception was DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS. During the period of bodybuilding prohibition he organized illegal „Amber Prix International“ („Gintarinis prizas“, «Янтарный приз», 1968 – 2025, Klaipeda, Lithuanian SSR) contests in 1974, 1975, 1976 and in 1977. Wishing to defend bodybuilding sport DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS for several years was in correspondence with the Ministry of Sport of the U.S.S.R. („U.S.S.R. Goskomsport“, Госкомспорт С.С.С.Р.). Finally received from the U.S.S.R. Ministry of Sport a negatyve answer DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS wrote a bodybuilding defending petition and personally brought it to Moscow. He presented the petition to the highest U.S.S.R. political powers: to the Central Committee of the U.S.S.R. Communist Party (Центральный Комитет Коммунистической партии С.С.С.Р.), to the U.S.S.R. Supreme Council (Верховный Совет С.С.С.Р.) and to the U.S.S.R. Ministry Council (Совет Министров С.С.С.Р.) and to the U.S.S.R. cental political newspapers „Pravda“ («Правда») and „Izvestija“ («Известия»). In 1978 due to the petition of DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS the U.S.S.R. political powers gave him permition to organize „Amber Prix International“ in Klaipeda (Lithuanian SSR).
Leaders do not like a stable life. A Leader of any kind has courage and resposibility. Leaders always seek the result end never doubt if they will not succeed. At the same time the majority does nothing. They sit in silence. So who was the bodybuilding Leader in the U.S.S.R.? The very similar to DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS life was of his friends in sport: the President I.F.B.B. (International Federation of Body Builders) BEN WEIDER, also the similar way of life was of the President N.A.B.B.A. (National Amateur Body Building Association) OSCAR HEIDENSTAM and W.A.B.B.A. (World Amateur Body Building Association) President SERGE NUBRET. The same similar way was of the General Secretary F.I.H.C. (Federation Internationale Halterophile et Culturiste) International OSCAR STATE.
Not knowing foreign languages narrowed possibilities of INNAR MARDO, but DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS assisted and helped him always. ROMANAS KALINAUSKAS did not know any foreign language and he always worked to be close to the U.S.S.R. Ministry of Sport. To say more he did his best to be close to the U.S.S.R. Weightlifting Federation (Федерация тяжёлой атлетики С.С.С.Р.). That were his top items for respect and loyality. But what he could get out of this when bodybuilding was prohibited in the U.S.S.R.? Just nothing.
While studying English and German philology at the Vilnius State University DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS did several attempts to unite gyms of Vilnius City. Nobody else never tried to do this. Anyway bodybuilding was prohibited in the U.S.S.R. and bodybuilders were afraid to do anything.
It is easy to speak when the work is done and everything goes smoothly. But at the moment to fight agaist bodybuilding prohibition no one supported DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS. No one. Today being already old many former U.S.S.R. bodybuilding organizers and bodybuilders try to „be Facebook friends“ of DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS. Fine. But where they were at the hard times of risky fighting?
During the fifty years of his bodybuilding activities there was a number of „deputies“ and assistants of DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS. Many wanted to take the place of DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS and to go on doing the same. No one succeeded.
Many disliked the stormy activities of DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS. Especially when he succeeded in his work. And he did. Having no wish to get into the intrigues of such people DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS got into the Vilnius State University in 1979 again. This time DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS studied law after he received the speciality of the phylology before. And again he succeeded. The same happened with INNAR MARDO. He was pressed by the people of envy and hate to leave his work and positions after the intriques in the formal Bodybuilding Federattion of the Estonian SSR. INNAR MARDO did not succeed to come back in full power again. There were several attemps but he was never back to the former normal situation. Hate and envy of his bodybuilding collegues ruined his life in sport. This information is based on the letters of INNAR MARDO to DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS.
Klaipeda bodybuilding was always a „Separate Republic“. And still is. It was in Lithuania, in the U.S.S.R. and Internationally now. It was based on the social and juridical status, on the International level - remember the World Bodybuilding Leaders whom we have mentioned above. International President W.F.F. – W.B.B.F. DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS is involved in the work of a number of International organizations which are collaborating with U.N. (United Nations) and U.N.S.E.C.O. (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). Who else was in the same position? The road was long. Much work and studies were needed.
Due to his active International work DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS meets many World known persons.
In 2010 in Portugal during the Congress of the International Order of Templars (O.S.M.T.H., Ordo Supremus Militari Templi Herosolimitani) for the original ideas to unite World Religions DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS by Greek ARCHIMANDRIT CHARALAMPIJ was awarded with the „St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Silver-Gold Medal“.
In 2011 the Official Visit of the President W.F.F. – W.B.B.F. (World Fitness Federation, World Body Building Federation) International DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS was organized to Vatican. Listening about the Bodybuilding activities during the years of prohibition of this sport in the Socialist Countries the Vatican Congregat Perfect Cardinal J. Em. JOZEF KARDINAL TOMKO (Кардинал Иозеф Томко) was interested very much. Very big interest was shown to the bodybuilding defending petition of DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS and the victory that was achieved due to this. J. Em. JOZEF KARDINAL TOMKO positively evaluated our efforts to fight for the Bodybuilding Sport recognition and at once he named DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS as the „disident of the Communist Regime“. For this work done the Vatican Congregat Perfect Cardinal J. Em. JOZEF KARDINAL TOMKO presented the Original Vatican Pontific Medal (Medaglia Ufficiale di Pontificato di Sua Santita Benedetto XVI) to the International President W.F.F. – W.B.B.F. Federation EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS (Headquarters State Vatican, Cita del Vaticano, March 29, 2011).
During the last decades DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS had meetings and spoke about various International questions with the President Parliament Austria Professor ALFRED GERSTL (Президент Парламента Австрии профессор Альфред Герстл), the Prime Minister of the Republic Slovakia VLADIMIR MECIAR (премьер министр Словакии Владимир Мечиар), the Prime Minister of the Republic Slovakia ROBERT FICO (премьер министр Словакии Роберт Фицо), President Parliament Republic Slovakia JAN FIGEL (президент Парламента Словакии Ян Фигель), President Parliament Republic Lithuania ARUNAS VALINSKAS (президент Парламента Литвы Арунас Валинскас), Prime Minister Republic Lithuania GEDIMINAS KIRKILAS (премьер министр Литвы Гедиминас Киркилас), Prime Minister Republic Lithuania ALGIRDAS BUTKEVICIUS (премьер министр Литвы Альгирдас Буткявичус) and other High State officials of various Asia and Europe Countries.
Crowning the fifty years of bodybuilding activities of DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS Russia journalists call him “The Father of Russia Bodybuilding” («Отец российского культуризма»).
In 2015 at the International contest in front of a number of Members of the Parliament Republic Lithuania the representative of the Government Republic Lithuania ANTANAS VINKUS (Антанас Винкус) named DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS the „Lithuania Embassador for the World“ («Амбассадор Литвы в мире»). Then National Teams of America, Asia, Africa and Europe took part at this event.

WORLD FITNESS HISTORY.
FIRST OVER ALL WORLD FITNESS CHAMPION.
Former representative of balely and gymnastics Lithuanian EDITA DAUBARAITE (now Sendriene, Dubar) was the ground ground ground daughter of BRONE DUBAR. It was Emigrant of Lithuania BRONE DUBAR (Broné “Brownie” Dubar, Daubaraitė, 1906 – 1986) who came with her family to the USA in 1912. When her sport achievements went high she started public shows. Specialists use to call her „World Fitness Pioneer“ but in her times there was no any fitness sport at all. To say more – women sport was included to „Olympics“ only in 1920. This was the reason that 100 years ago gymnastic and acrobatic exercises of BRONE DUBAR were not named as „sport“. Aiming to make fitness propaganda BRONE DUBAR made her shows through all USA – from South to North and from West to East.
In 1995 EDITA DAUBARAITE was present at the N.A.B.B.A. (National Amateur Body Building Association) World Championship in Malta. There was one exceptional athlete among many women bodybuilders. Shie was DANIELA HARIC (Croatia). DANIELA HARIC was not muscular. She performed a complex routine full of gymnastic elements. „I want this..“ – said EDITA DAUBARAITE and when back to Lithuania she started prerparations. Everything was ok. In 1996 the founders of the W.F.F. - International (World Fitness Federation) DSc. EDMUNDAS DAUBARAS, German KLAUS P.J. HOFFMANN, Greek ANARGIROS TSOPUORIDIS and Austrian PETER PAPULA started W.F.F. World Fitness Championships in Kaizerslautern (Germany). That was a revolution in bodybuilding. They wanted to run away from huge muscles. This way in 1997 in Manheim (Germany) EDITA DAUBARAITE became the Over All World Fitness Champion. „Eurosport“ Television made several reports about this. The Sport Ministry of Lithuanian Republic wanted to present EDITA DAUBARAITE an Official Governmental Award but envy and intrigues among sport federations ruined this idea.

GREAT ORGANIZATION.
GREAT DATES.
As 2028 approaches, the International WFF–WBBF Federation is preparing to commemorate a significant milestone – the 60th anniversary of its international activities. During this period, the organization has grown into a global sports movement, bringing together members from 141 countries across all continents.
Despite the challenges that have affected the world in recent years – including the pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and other international developments – the Federation has maintained active operations, consistently promoting initiatives in sport, physical activity, fitness, and healthy living. Our mission is to provide opportunities for people of all ages and physical abilities to participate in sporting activities while strengthening international cooperation in this field.
The Federation's history is closely linked with Lithuania and its contribution to the development of international sport:
• In 1967, the international tournament “Amber Prix” was established in Lithuania. In 2027, the event will celebrate its anniversary in Klaipėda.
• In 1968, the International Athletic Gymnastics (Bodybuilding) Federation was founded in Lithuania and coordinated the development of this sport in numerous countries.
• During challenging historical periods, the Federation faced various restrictions; however, its community successfully preserved sporting traditions and ensured the continuity of its activities.
• Following 1991, the Federation actively expanded its participation in the international sports movement, developing cooperation with sports organizations and institutions in many countries.
• Since 1999, special attention has been devoted to children's sports through the “Fit-Kid” programs and to the development of sports opportunities for persons with disabilities.
• In 2004, fitness model competitions were introduced into the Federation's event program, attracting broad international interest.
• Since 2024, the Federation has further intensified its activities in fitness, physical activity, and wellness, promoting sport as a means of improving public well-being and quality of life.
The results achieved in recent years confirm the relevance of these activities and the growing public interest in them. In 2026, approximately 300 athletes from various countries participated in the professional “Universe” competition held in Klaipėda, while the European Amateur Championship in Croatia attracted more than 2,000 participants.
Throughout its history, the Federation has sought constructive cooperation with national and local authorities, sports organizations, and public institutions. In many countries, our events have been recognized as a meaningful contribution to promoting physical activity, strengthening international relations, and encouraging healthy lifestyles. In recent years, the Federation's work has received attention and recognition in Austria, Slovakia, Poland, Estonia, India, and other countries.
The forthcoming 60th anniversary represents not only an important historical achievement for our organization but also an opportunity to once again emphasize the importance of sport in strengthening public health, international cooperation, cultural dialogue, and social unity.
We look forward to continuing meaningful cooperation and to contributing, through joint efforts, to the promotion of sport, physical activity, fitness, and healthy living on an international scale.

“History of “Amber Prix”.
“Mr. Absoliutus SSSR”
Sports organizers and administrators hold competitions in which athletes strive for victory and the highest achievements. It is through these competitions that victories and outstanding performances become known to the public through the media. Without sporting achievements, many athletes would remain unknown to the wider public.
Victories bring joy and pride not only to the athletes themselves, but also to their families, coaches, teammates, and the entire sporting community. Every victory is a recognition of years of hard work, perseverance, and dedication.
Although countless athletes compete in sporting events, only a select few leave a lasting mark on the history of sport through their exceptional achievements. These athletes become role models for younger generations and inspire others to pursue excellence and strive for the highest goals.
Today’s athletes usually know the strongmen of past decades only through stories and recollections. Yet there was a time when one man’s name resonated throughout the bodybuilding world of the Soviet Union. That man was Viktoras Jucys from Klaipeda. By the late 1980s, he had become the undisputed leader of Soviet bodybuilding. Vladimir Dubinin, President of the Russian IFBB Federation, once referred to him as “Mr. Absoliutus SSSR” – a title that perfectly reflected his dominance in competition during that era.
His journey to the top began in Klaipeda. The first time he saw the competitors of the famous “Amber Prix” tournament, he was astonished by their physiques and athleticism. Leaving the event, he made a promise to himself: “I will become like them.” That moment marked the beginning of a goal that would change his life.
He did not join a gym immediately. Instead, he began training alone in a garage near the seaside. The conditions were primitive. During winter he worked out wearing a heavy jacket and gloves to keep warm, and at times his evening training sessions were lit only by candlelight. Yet such hardships never discouraged him. Like many enthusiasts of that era, he learned discipline, perseverance, and the determination to pursue his dream regardless of circumstances.
After eventually joining a bodybuilding club, Viktoras was encouraged by his coach to compete. His first attempt, however, was unsuccessful. Disappointed, he turned his attention to karate. At that time, both bodybuilding and karate were viewed unfavorably by Soviet authorities and were, at various periods, effectively banned. Such restrictions only strengthened the commitment of those who practiced them. Having mastered the basics of martial arts, Jucys competed successfully until the authorities closed the city’s only karate club. He then returned to where his sporting journey had begun – the bodybuilding gym.
From that point on, training became the center of his life. The results soon followed. In 1984 and 1985, Jucys won the overall title in the youth division of the “Amber Prix” tournament. In 1985, he also captured first place at the “Komsomol Cup” competition in Kaunas. Soon afterward began the most remarkable period of his career.
From 1986 onward, Viktoras won every competition he entered. He claimed victory twice at the “White Nights” Tournament in Leningrad, won the “Amber Prix” three times, and became the overall champion of the first official USSR Bodybuilding Cup. He also accumulated nineteen victories in international competitions. During those years, he had no equal in the Soviet Union.
His physical attributes were equally impressive. Standing 174 centimeters tall, he weighed approximately 109 kilograms between competitions. Both his biceps and calves measured an extraordinary 50 centimeters in circumference. Jucys preferred training with extremely heavy weights, and although his workouts were relatively short, they were exceptionally intense. In the gym, certain pieces of equipment even acquired nicknames: “Viktoras’s barbell” and “Viktoras’s dumbbells.” These were weights so heavy that few other athletes dared to use them.
The story of Viktoras Jucys is the story of a man who rose from training in an unheated garage in Klaipeda to the pinnacle of Soviet bodybuilding. His achievements stand not only as a testament to extraordinary determination and talent, but also as an important chapter in the history of Lithuanian bodybuilding.

Stories of the “Amber Prix”
Michael Mitchell – Always at the Top
One of the most remarkable personalities associated with the legendary international “Amber Prix” tournament was the outstanding Scottish athlete, actor, film director, and former officer of the British Special Forces, Michael Mitchell (1956–2021). His life was distinguished not only by exceptional sporting achievements but also by an extraordinary range of professional experiences that earned him respect in many countries around the world.
Michael Mitchell became involved in the activities of the World WFF–WBBF Federation in 1996. From the very beginning, he became an active participant in the Federation's events and a loyal supporter of its ideals. For more than twenty-five years, he took part in European and World Championships, international congresses, official Federation meetings, and numerous representative events. Until the very last days of his life, he remained an active member of the WFF–WBBF Federation and one of its most respected international ambassadors.
As an athlete, Michael Mitchell achieved outstanding success. Throughout his long competitive career, he won numerous international championships and earned many prestigious titles. His victories brought recognition not only to his native Scotland but also to the World WFF–WBBF Federation. Owing to his exceptional physical condition, discipline, professionalism, and sportsmanship, he earned great respect among athletes from all over the world. Many representatives of the younger generation regarded him as an example of how sporting excellence could be combined with personal integrity, dignity, and respect for one's competitors.
However, Michael Mitchell's achievements extended far beyond the world of sport. He was also a professional actor and film director, appearing in numerous film productions and participating in international film festivals, where he received several awards for his artistic work. His broad experience enabled him to communicate easily with people from different professions and cultures, making him an outstanding representative of the WFF–WBBF Federation on the international stage.
Equally important was his military career. As a former officer of the British Special Forces, Michael retained throughout his life the qualities expected of a professional soldier—discipline, responsibility, determination, and the ability to make sound decisions under difficult circumstances. These characteristics were clearly reflected in both his sporting career and his public activities.
In 2005, Michael Mitchell purchased a home on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey. It became his second home, where he spent much of his leisure time. It was there that the idea emerged to organize one of the Federation's most important international events in Turkey.
While preparations were underway for the 2007 international WFF–WBBF Championship at the prestigious LykiaWorld Resort, Michael Mitchell invited WFF–WBBF President Edmundas Daubaras to Turkey in 2006. An official press conference was organized, attended by Turkish journalists, sports officials, and representatives of the Ministry of Sports. During the event, the activities of the World WFF–WBBF Federation, its World Championships, and the forthcoming championship in Turkey were presented. This meeting became an important step in expanding the Federation's activities throughout the Mediterranean region and the Middle East.
Another significant event was the 2007 World Championship held in Vilnius, Lithuania. Following the championship, Michael Mitchell, as a member of the official WFF–WBBF delegation, participated in an official reception at the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania and in a press conference at the ELTA National News Agency. The meetings focused on recently completed championships, the Federation's future plans, and prospects for international cooperation. The history of the legendary “Amber Prix” tournament was also presented, together with the project for organizing its forthcoming 40th anniversary event. These official meetings demonstrated that the Federation's activities were recognized not only within the international sports community but also at the governmental level.
Throughout his life, Michael Mitchell received numerous sporting, public, and artistic awards. Among the distinctions he valued most was the WFF–WBBF Federation “Honor Gold Medal”, solemnly awarded to him in 2010. This prestigious award is presented only to individuals whose contributions have had lasting significance in the history of world bodybuilding and whose work has strengthened the Federation's international reputation.
Michael Mitchell's life was filled with challenges, achievements, and meaningful accomplishments. Sport, military service, cinema, and public activity merged into an extraordinary life dedicated to excellence. Whatever field he entered, he always pursued the highest standards. For this reason, the title of this article—"Always at the Top"—perfectly reflects both his character and his life's achievements.
Conclusions
Michael Mitchell was one of the most distinguished personalities in the history of the World WFF–WBBF Federation. His contribution extended far beyond competitive bodybuilding. He became an international ambassador of the Federation, an active promoter of its ideals, and an important figure in the history of the legendary “Amber Prix” tournament.
His reputation in sport, cinema, and public life helped promote the name of the WFF–WBBF Federation in many countries around the world. Through his personal initiatives, support for international events, and active participation in official Federation activities, he made a significant contribution to the Federation's international recognition and development.
Years after his passing, Michael Mitchell continues to be remembered with great respect. He remains not only a World Champion and accomplished actor but also a man whose loyalty to sport, his friends, and the WFF–WBBF Federation never wavered. For this reason, his name has earned a permanent place in the history of the legendary “Amber Prix” tournament, while his life's example continues to inspire new generations of athletes around the world.

The History of the "Amber Prix"
Rolandas Bučinskas – An Athlete at the Crossroads of Two Eras
Rolandas Bučinskas is one of the most distinguished figures in Lithuanian bodybuilding, whose career reflects the development of the sport from the mid-1980s through the end of the twentieth century. His sporting life encompassed remarkable victories, political change, organizational struggles, and personal setbacks, making him one of the defining personalities of Lithuanian bodybuilding during this period.
Bučinskas demonstrated exceptional talent at an early age. In 1982, while still competing as a junior athlete, he participated in the “Georg Tenno Memorial” tournament in Tallinn, where he finished second in his category. At that time, the competition was among the most prestigious bodybuilding events in the Soviet Union, and his performance immediately established him as one of Lithuania's most promising young competitors.
His career, however, was soon complicated by internal conflicts within the Lithuanian bodybuilding community rather than by sporting considerations. During the period when bodybuilding remained officially prohibited in the Soviet Union, Romanas Kalinauskas, head of the unofficial Lithuanian SSR Bodybuilding Federation, prohibited Rolandas Bučinskas from participating in competitions. Such a decision could easily have ended the career of a talented young athlete.
Seeking an opportunity to return to competition, Bučinskas turned to Edmundas Daubaras, who maintained close relations with Estonian bodybuilding organizer Inar Mardo. Thanks to Mardo's guarantees, Bučinskas was allowed to compete in the 1983 “Georg Tenno Memorial”, where he won the junior division. The victory became not only a sporting comeback but also proof that genuine talent could not be suppressed by administrative restrictions.
Bučinskas achieved even greater recognition in 1986 when he won the Overall Champion title at the prestigious international Amber Prix tournament. By then, the Amber Prix had become one of the most significant bodybuilding competitions in Eastern Europe, and the Overall Champion title represented the highest level of athletic excellence. This victory firmly established him among Lithuania's elite bodybuilders.
Following the official restoration of bodybuilding competitions in the Soviet Union, Bučinskas competed in the 1988 USSR Bodybuilding Cup, where he placed second in his weight category. For this achievement, he was awarded the title of “Master of Sport of the USSR”, one of the highest sporting distinctions of the period.
A defining chapter of Bučinskas' career came in 1991. After Lithuania restored its independence, Lithuanian athletes found themselves in a unique and difficult position. Most refused to compete for Soviet teams or participate in Soviet competitions in accordance with the policy adopted by the Lithuanian National Olympic Committee. At the same time, Lithuania's newly established sports organizations had not yet been fully recognized internationally, leaving athletes with very limited opportunities to compete abroad.
To overcome this situation, Edmundas Daubaras, encouraged by Lithuania's Minister of Sport Algirdas Raslanas, registered the Lithuanian National Bodybuilding Association (LNKA) with the Ministry of Justice, creating the first official bodybuilding organization of independent Lithuania. Shortly afterward, he organized a delegation of Lithuania's leading bodybuilders to compete at the NABBA European Championships in France, with Rolandas Bučinskas joining the team.
The decision proved historic. Rolandas Bučinskas and Natalija Murnikovienė of Klaipėda both captured European Championship titles, bringing home the first international gold medals ever won by independent Lithuania in bodybuilding. Their victories carried significance far beyond sport, symbolizing Lithuania's successful return to the international sporting community. At the same time, another group of Lithuanian bodybuilders, led by Romanas Kalinauskas, chose a more cautious approach and continued waiting until after the failed August 1991 Moscow coup before fully distancing themselves from the Soviet sports system.
Bučinskas continued his successful career within the IFBB. In 1996, he became IFBB European Champion, once again confirming his place among Europe's leading bodybuilders.
In 1997, he won his weight category at the IFBB World Championships. However, after failing a doping test, his world title was revoked and his victory officially annulled. This became the most painful episode of his sporting career and profoundly affected both his reputation and future professional path.
Even before the final doping results were announced, Bučinskas had begun preparing to emigrate to the United States in 1998. Once again, he sought assistance from Edmundas Daubaras, who contacted his long-time American friend Louis Zwick.
Their friendship dated back to 1989 during the international USSR–USA bodybuilding match. At that time, Edmundas Daubaras, Louis Zwick, Viktoras Jucys, and Rolandas Bučinskas managed to evade surveillance by Soviet KGB officers and secretly filmed two documentary productions about Lithuanian bodybuilders training at a cultural center outside Leningrad. Later that year, the films were broadcast on the American television network ESPN. Copies remain preserved in the archives of the World WFF–WBBF Federation. These documentaries became some of the earliest Western television productions featuring Lithuanian bodybuilding before the restoration of the country's independence.
By 1998, Louis Zwick owned a private television production company that produced bodybuilding programs for ESPN and organized numerous international events, including Miss Fitness America, Miss America Pageant, Hit the Rock, and others. Through his professional connections, he helped Bučinskas secure employment in the sports publishing and media industry. However, after the official announcement of the positive doping result, Bučinskas decided to leave the professional sports industry.
Today, Rolandas Bučinskas lives and works in the United States with his family.
Conclusions
Rolandas Bučinskas' sporting career represents far more than a collection of athletic achievements. His life mirrors the transformation of Lithuanian bodybuilding itself—from years of prohibition under the Soviet regime, through the struggle for international recognition, to the establishment of independent Lithuania within the global bodybuilding community.
His victory at the 1991 NABBA European Championships remains one of the landmark moments in Lithuanian bodybuilding history. It was not merely a sporting triumph but also an important symbol of the country's re-emergence on the international stage after the restoration of independence.
Although the 1997 doping case fundamentally altered the public perception of his competitive career, it does not diminish his earlier accomplishments or his contribution to the history of Lithuanian bodybuilding. From a historical perspective, Rolandas Bučinskas remains one of the defining figures of Lithuanian bodybuilding during the final decades of the twentieth century, an athlete whose career reflects both the remarkable achievements and the complex challenges faced by the sport during a period of profound political and social change.

For Lalit Soni, Lithuania represents more than simply a venue for international competitions. During his visits to the city of Klaipėda, he repeatedly organized performances and demonstrations by Indian athletes in local kindergartens, inspiring children to embrace physical activity, healthy living, and the ideals of sport. These visits became a meaningful expression of friendship and cultural exchange between India and Lithuania.
One of Professor Soni's greatest achievements has been his commitment to discovering and developing young sporting talent. Thanks to his guidance and organizational efforts, many gifted Indian athletes have achieved international recognition. A remarkable example is Fateh Gill, who, at only three years of age, became the WFF–WBBF World Champion in the Martial Arts Division during the 2024 World Championship held in Klaipėda. His extraordinary performance attracted widespread international attention, while in India he quickly became a symbol of youthful determination and inspiration, demonstrating that early guidance and systematic development can produce exceptional results.
The life and work of Professor Lalit Soni represent the modern ideal of sports leadership. He is not merely an organizer of competitions or an administrator of sports organizations; he is a builder of long-term international cooperation, bringing together athletes, organizations, and cultures from many nations. His career demonstrates that sport is a powerful instrument for strengthening international friendship, educating young generations, promoting humanitarian values, and building mutual understanding among peoples.

Over many years, he has become one of the leading personalities of the international WFF–WBBF movement in Asia, making a substantial contribution to the Federation's expansion, to the international success of Indian athletes, and to the education of future generations.
His organizational leadership, public service, and charitable activities clearly demonstrate that genuine sporting leadership is measured not only by victories in competition but also by the ability to unite people, inspire young athletes, promote international cooperation, and uphold the highest humanitarian ideals of sport. For these reasons, Professor Lalit Soni is rightly regarded as one of the most distinguished international figures in the contemporary history of the World WFF–WBBF Federation.
